Why Stone & Scribe? The Meaning Behind the Name

If you have ever wondered where the name Stone & Scribe comes from, the answer is rooted in Scripture and in the heart behind what we are trying to build.

It was never meant to be just a name that sounded adventurous or memorable. I wanted it to carry meaning. I wanted it to represent something lasting, something worth preserving, and something that could be passed from one generation to the next.

At the center of that meaning is a passage from Joshua 24.

Joshua stands before the people and says:

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:15

I have always loved that declaration. There is something powerful about a family deciding what they are going to build their lives around and what will shape the culture of their home.

That idea is a big part of what I hope Stone & Scribe can represent. The families who choose to bring this into their homes are making an intentional decision to place Scripture, faith, and truth in front of their children in a way that feels meaningful and memorable.

But the connection to Joshua goes even deeper.

The Stone

A few verses later, after the people renew their commitment, Joshua records what has happened and sets up a large stone as a witness.

The stone was not there simply as decoration. It represented something that had happened and something that should not be forgotten. It became a physical reminder of the commitment the people had made and of the words they had spoken.

The Stone & Scribe - Joshua's Witness Stone

That image has always stayed with me.

For Stone & Scribe, the stone represents something lasting. It represents remembrance, witness, and the idea that some truths are too important to simply hear once and move on from.

We want children to encounter Scripture in a way that leaves a mark. We want them to ask questions, make connections, discover what is happening in the text, and remember what they have learned.

The goal is not simply to give them information. It is to help create moments that stay with them.

The Scribe

The second half of the name is the scribe.

A scribe records, preserves, and passes things on. That role represents something equally important to the heart of Stone & Scribe.

Truth is not only something to hear. It is something to preserve, revisit, study, and pass forward.

That is one of the reasons we built Stone & Scribe around investigation and discovery. We want children to do more than passively read a Bible story. We want them to look closely, search Scripture, ask questions, and begin to understand why these stories matter.

The scribe represents the responsibility of preserving what is true and making sure it is not lost.

What the Name Means Together

When those two ideas come together, the name begins to tell the whole story.

The stone is the witness. It reminds us of what matters and of what should not be forgotten.

The scribe preserves the record. It represents the work of keeping truth, understanding it, and passing it to the next generation.

Together, those ideas reflect what we hope Stone & Scribe can become for families.

We want to help parents place something meaningful into the hands and hearts of their children. Something that creates curiosity, encourages questions, opens the Bible, and helps Scripture become more familiar and more personal.

The experience may begin with an envelope in the mailbox, a mystery to solve, or a clue to uncover, but the deeper purpose is much bigger than that.

It is about helping kids remember what is true and giving families another way to bring Scripture into the rhythm of everyday life.

A Witness. A Record. A Legacy.

That is why the phrase “A witness. A record. A legacy.” fits the name so well.

The witness points back to what God has done. The record preserves what is true. The legacy is what gets passed on to the next generation.

That is the hope behind Stone & Scribe.

Not simply to create something fun for kids to receive in the mail, but to create something that helps families slow down, explore Scripture together, and give children truths they can carry with them long after the mystery has been solved.

And ultimately, it comes back to the words of Joshua:

“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

That is the heart behind the name.
